A Philadelphia man is facing charges after police say he stole nearly $800 worth of merchandise from a local grocery store last week.
According to the Jenkintown Police Department, the incident occurred on Friday, May 1, 2026, at approximately 10:29 a.m. at the Giant Food Store located along York Road.
Police say the store’s on-duty manager reported that a man left the store with a large quantity of meat and other items without paying. The suspect, described as wearing blue jeans, a black baseball cap, and a brown jacket, allegedly pushed the items out of the store in a metal cart he had brought with him.
An officer in the area located a man matching the description at a SEPTA bus stop near Old York Road and Township Line Road shortly after the report. The individual, identified as Calvin Jackson, told police he had paid for the items but was unable to provide a receipt.
A store employee was brought to the scene and positively identified Jackson as the individual who exited the store without paying, according to authorities.
Police said the recovered merchandise totaled $799.33. Due to store policy, all food items had to be discarded and could not be returned to shelves, resulting in a financial loss for the business.
Charges have been filed, and the case will proceed through the court system.
