A Dresher man accused of plotting to have his ex-girlfriend and two others killed appeared in court this week, where he was held without bail as prosecutors laid out the case against him, according to a report.
Eric Berkowitz, 41, of Dresher, attended a hearing on Tuesday, April 21, in Montgomery County.
A witness, an acquaintance from Berkowitz’s past, testified that the defendant had contacted him unexpectedly and proposed a plan to kill three individuals in New York. Prosecutors said Berkowitz offered payment and provided materials to carry out the killings.
As part of the hearing, the court also reviewed a recorded conversation between Berkowitz and the witness. According to prosecutors, while the language in the recording was somewhat vague, Berkowitz made clear his intent, including stating he would personally “take care of” one of the targets.
Defense attorneys challenged the strength of the evidence, arguing that there was no definitive proof Berkowitz intended to carry out the plan or that he truly solicited someone to commit murder. Despite those arguments, the judge ruled that the charges were serious enough to deny bail.
Berkowitz remains in custody at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility as the case moves forward.
During the proceeding, Berkowitz frequently leaned toward his attorneys, speaking quietly with them while prosecutors described the charges. At several points, he shook his head in apparent disagreement with the testimony being given.
He also appeared emotionally engaged with the courtroom process, at times reaching out to hold the hand of a family member seated nearby. Observers noted that he spoke with the relative during portions of the hearing, seemingly disputing statements made by a key witness.
