Two neighboring synagogues are taking a closer look at what a shared future could mean for Jewish life in the area.
Leaders at Temple Sinai in Dresher and Adath Jeshurun in Elkins Park have entered a more serious round of discussions about a potential partnership, possibly even a merger, after months of early-stage conversations.
According to Temple Sinai’s Board of Directors, discussions between the congregations began some time ago but remained quiet while Adath Jeshurun explored multiple options. Recently, AJ leadership narrowed its focus, prompting both sides to take a deeper look at what working together could involve.
The update comes amid growing community awareness, as members of both congregations have already interacted at joint services and events.
For Dresher-area residents and congregants, synagogue leaders emphasized that there are no immediate changes planned.
Temple Sinai will remain in its current location, and there are no plans to relocate. Officials also stress that the process is still in an exploratory phase, with no formal agreements, votes, or decisions made at this time.
Instead, early conversations are centered on possibilities such as shared programming, joint events, and other forms of collaboration.
A small exploratory committee, chaired by Bill Kramer, has been formed to begin more structured dialogue with Adath Jeshurun leadership.
In the coming weeks, synagogue leaders say they plan to:
An update is expected at Temple Sinai’s Annual Meeting on May 20, where leadership may also outline potential next steps, including how a formal vote would work if talks progress further.
If that stage is reached, Adath Jeshurun is expected to vote first, followed by Temple Sinai.
Temple Sinai leaders say the process will be guided by a focus on transparency, respect for both congregations, and strengthening the broader Jewish community in the region.
They are encouraging members to submit questions and stay engaged as discussions continue.
As collaboration grows, the two congregations are also inviting the broader community to attend an upcoming joint program: “Tekes Ma’avar: Facing the Dark; Embracing the Light," which will take place on Tuesday, April 21, at 7 p.m. featuring Israeli ensemble Nava Tehila
Residents from both Dresher and Elkins Park are welcome to attend.
