BAN ON PLASTICS

Jenkintown officials pass ordinance to place new restrictions on single-use plastics

Retail businesses in Jenkintown will no longer be permitted to provide single-use plastic bags to customers at checkout

The Jenkintown Borough Council, working in collaboration with the Jenkintown Environmental Advisory Committee, recently approved a new ordinance that places new restrictions on single-use plastics at retail establishments.

The new measure, Ordinance No. 2026-2, is titled “Single Use Plastic Regulations,” will begin on July 23, 2026, when retail businesses in Jenkintown will no longer be permitted to provide single-use plastic bags to customers at checkout. Residents are encouraged to bring reusable bags when shopping.

Stores may instead offer recycled paper bags or reusable bags for a minimum charge of $0.10 per bag. Customers using SNAP, WIC, or TANF benefits will be exempt from this fee, and the charge may also be waived for online orders. All revenue collected from bag fees will remain with the retail establishment.

Also effective July 23, 2026, businesses will be required to provide only compostable straws and stirrers. However, single-use plastic straws will still be available upon customer request.

Retailers must post signage informing customers of these changes beginning April 22, 2026, and continuing through at least September 23, 2026. The Borough has made an example of the required signage available for businesses to download and display.

To assist with compliance, the Jenkintown Environmental Advisory Committee has prepared an informational toolkit for businesses. The resource includes a summary of exemptions, frequently asked questions, and details on enforcement procedures.

Initial violations will be addressed through written notices. Businesses that recently purchased inventory of single-use plastic bags may apply for a hardship exemption of up to one year by contacting the Borough Manager.

The ordinance represents a broader effort by local officials to reduce plastic waste and encourage more sustainable consumer practices within the community.
