Child luring concern near middle school ruled out after investigation, officials say

The investigation remains active as police continue to follow up with all parties involved

Initial fears of a possible child luring incident near Upper Moreland Middle School have been dismissed following an investigation by the Upper Moreland Township Police Department.

According to school officials from the Upper Moreland School District, the situation began last week when two students reported suspicious activity while walking home around 2:40 p.m. near the intersection of Exton and Morris roads. A vehicle, described as possibly a blue 2006 Acura TSX with tinted windows, was said to have attempted to make contact with the students.

The report prompted an immediate police investigation and heightened concern among families about a potential child luring attempt. However, in an update issued the following morning, authorities confirmed that the incident was not a child-luring situation and there is "no danger to the community."

"The Upper Moreland Township Police Department has informed us that, based on their investigation, there is no danger to the community," school officials wrote. "UMPD has made contact with the individual associated with the vehicle and determined that this was not an attempt to lure students."

According to school officials, the investigation remains active as police continue to follow up with all parties involved.

School officials praised the police department for its “swift, thorough, and professional response,” noting that the strong partnership between law enforcement and the district plays a key role in maintaining student safety.

Out of an abundance of caution, police increased their presence around school campuses following the initial report. District leaders are continuing to encourage families and students to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to school officials, police, or the Safe2Say Something hotline.

This incident comes just weeks after Upper Moreland Middle School dealt with an online threat of a student bringing a weapon to school. That threat was determined to be not credible by UMPD.
