Officials with the Upper Moreland School District say schools remained safe Wednesday after authorities investigated a reported social media threat targeting the middle school.
According to Superintendent Dr. Sue Elliott, the threat was reported through the Safe2Say Something system late Tuesday night, March 17. The report indicated that a student had made a statement online about bringing a weapon to school.
The Upper Moreland Police Department (UMPD) responded immediately and conducted an overnight investigation. Authorities ultimately determined that the threat was not credible.
School and police officials confirmed that all schools were safe for students and staff on Wednesday, March 18.
“As always, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority,” Elliott said in a message to the community.
Out of an abundance of caution, police maintained an increased presence at the middle school Wednesday morning. District officials expressed appreciation for local law enforcement and the Safe2Say system, which allowed for a rapid response to the situation.
The district is encouraging students, families, and staff to continue reporting any safety concerns to school administrators or through the Safe2Say Something hotline, noting that all reports are taken seriously and investigated.
Officials also acknowledged that incidents like this can cause anxiety among students. Families are encouraged to contact school counselors if their child experiences fear or distress related to the situation.
