Guards observe approaching vehicles and traffic signals while watching for students who are preparing to cross the street. They instruct children to wait safely at the edge of the roadway until it is safe to cross and signal to drivers that pedestrians are about to enter the crosswalk. After students cross safely, guards return to their designated curb position. Crossing guards assist pedestrians but do not direct vehicle traffic.
The role involves working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods, walk frequently, and remain alert to surrounding activity. Visual awareness, hearing, and clear verbal communication are important components of the job.
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and demonstrate the ability to work independently while maintaining communication with supervisors within the Community Policing Division.
