Abington Township will receive $1.5 million in state funding to support the next phase of the Abington-Jenkintown Connections Project, a long-running effort focused on pedestrian safety, transportation access, and stormwater improvements in the area, Rep. Ben Sanchez announced.

The funding comes through Pennsylvania’s Multimodal Transportation Fund and will be used for Phase 5 of the project, which centers on improvements at the intersection of Jenkintown Road and Meetinghouse Road. The intersection is a heavily traveled corridor used daily by residents, commuters, and public transit riders.

“This funding reflects the importance of coordinated state and local efforts to improve transportation infrastructure,” Sanchez said. “Projects like this benefit drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and local businesses alike.”

The Abington-Jenkintown Connections Project is a multi-phase initiative designed to improve pedestrian connectivity and infrastructure along several key roadways, including Washington Lane, Jenkintown Road, Greenwood Avenue, and Meetinghouse Road. Planning began in 2017 under the Abington Township Board of Commissioners and has been carried out in partnership with Jenkintown Borough.

Phase 5 is expected to build on earlier work by expanding sidewalk connections, improving access to transit stops, enhancing pedestrian safety, and upgrading traffic operations at and around the Jenkintown and Meetinghouse Roads intersection, as well as along Greenwood Avenue.

“This funding is a clear statement that our neighborhoods matter,” State Sen. Art Haywood said. “By investing in our district, we are strengthening dignity at the community level and building safer, stronger, and more inclusive places to live, work, and raise a family.”

Local officials also pointed to the long-term impact of completing the final phase of the project.

"I am thrilled that this funding will enable the completion of the last phase of the transformative Abington-Jenkintown Connections Project,” said Abington Commissioner Stuart Winegrad, who chairs the township’s Finance Committee. “We will achieve safer pedestrian access to open spaces, neighborhoods, parks and commercial centers while also improving and enhancing the traffic flow at an essential location in Abington Township."

Township Manager Christopher Christman emphasized the financial benefits for residents.

“Abington Township extends its gratitude to Rep. Sanchez and Sen. Haywood for their continued advocacy in the General Assembly. Their combined efforts in securing this grant enable the township to complete this essential public safety project. By leveraging grant funding, the township can reduce the burden on local taxpayers and direct resources toward other important community needs.”

Rep. Sanchez represents Pennsylvania’s 153rd Legislative District, which includes Rockledge and parts of Abington and Upper Dublin townships in Montgomery County.
