The Abington School District Board of School Directors will review proposed updates to the district’s academic programming at its board meeting to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
The Abington Board of School Directors will conduct its regularly scheduled meeting at 7:30 p.m. via a YouTube live stream on the Abington School District YouTube channel.
Each year, the district examines its academic programs and considers additions, modifications, or deletions of courses to ensure alignment with educational goals, workforce readiness, and postsecondary expectations. In recent years, this process has led to several notable initiatives, including the creation of College and Career Pathways, the expansion of dual enrollment partnerships, and the development of foundational reading courses.
Portrait of a Graduate
Looking ahead to the 2026–2027 school year, district administrators will present proposed updates to the Program of Studies at both the middle and high school levels. Among the proposed changes is the inclusion of the Abington School District’s “Portrait of a Graduate” framework within the Middle School and Senior High School Programs of Studies. The framework outlines the skills, attributes, and competencies the district aims for students to develop by graduation.
At the high school level, the proposed Program of Studies for Abington Senior High School includes two new course additions and eight course modifications. District officials explained that the changes are intended to better align course offerings with student interests, academic pathways, and postsecondary opportunities.
Middle and Senior High School
This year, staff is defining grade-level indicators of success and aligning each indicator with the curriculum. The Portrait of a Graduate graphic and descriptors have been added to the front of the Programs of Studies to serve as the overarching vision for the academic program.
Elementary School
Next year, staff in grades K–5 will continue this work, ensuring a consistent, district-wide approach.
Program of Studies
Proposed updates to the Abington Senior High School Program of Studies include several additions and modifications across multiple departments. In the Business department, a new elective, Leadership in Business (5 credits), is proposed. Several courses would also be renamed or restructured, including Foundations of Innovation becoming the required College and Career Explorations, Introduction to Information Technology becoming Introduction to Networking and Cybersecurity, and Money and Investing being updated to Principles of Investing.
In Mathematics, the district is proposing the addition of Algebra and Statistics, a new 10-credit elective.
The Music department recommendations include multiple course updates, with several classes being redesigned as workshops or industry-focused offerings. These changes include renaming and credit adjustments for music theory and music technology courses, as well as updated honors-level options, all remaining electives.
The board is expected to continue discussions on the proposed academic updates as part of its review process before final approval for the 2026–2027 school year.
