An Elkins Park resident is drawing national baseball attention after a jaw-dropping video showed him throwing a 101.8 mph fastball at just 16 years old, according to a report.
Cole Kuhn, who is a right-handed pitcher standing at 6'6," 197-lbs., was recently featured by BSBLR, a national baseball publication, after radar-gun footage of his triple-digit velocity went viral. Triple-digit fastballs are rare even in Major League Baseball, making Kuhn’s performance at his age nearly unheard of.
Already committed to Duke University and eligible for the 2027 MLB Draft, the current St. Joseph's Prep athlete is considered one of the most physically projectable arms in his class, who currently attends St. Joseph's Prep. He will not turn 18 until after the 2027 draft, making his development is far from complete.
"Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels," Kuhn said when asked by CBS News who he models his game after. "In 2008, they won it, and I was born in 09, so I'm definitely a big Cole Hamels fan."
Originally ranked No. 33 nationally in his class, the publication notes that ranking now appears outdated given the rarity of his velocity, size, and mechanics at such a young age. Scouts value not just the speed, but Kuhn’s build, leverage, and long-term durability.
"I was overwhelmed with joy," Kuhn added in the interview. "I was really focused on this winter, getting stronger and more explosive. Then 101 comes, and I feel great about it."
