The Abington Police Department announced the recognition of Officer Janelle Hunt for her policing efforts that led to the recovery of an illegal firearm that was connected to a 2024 aggravated assault.

On Tuesday, Officer Hunt received an Officer Commendation for her efforts.

According to the department, on July 19, 2025, Officer Hunt conducted a traffic stop, where a vehicle was occupied by the operator and two passengers. During a search she discovered a backpack with a handgun with a loaded magazine and an obliterated serial number. The suspect was taken into custody without incident, and the situation was resolved safely.

Further investigation revealed that the recovered firearm was linked to an aggravated assault that occurred in Philadelphia in 2024.

"As a result of Officer Hunt’s commitment to proactive policing and reliance on her training and experience, she was able to successfully remove an illegal firearm from the street, making a direct and meaningful contribution to the safety and well-being of the community," Abington Police Department wrote.
