Willow Grove could soon see the return of a familiar sandwich chain as Firehouse Subs plans a major expansion back into the Philadelphia region, with Montgomery County firmly in focus.
According to reporting by The Philadelphia Business Journal, the Florida-based fast-casual brand is eyeing Willow Grove as a key suburban location as part of a broader strategy to open between 50 and 80 restaurants across the region over the next five to 10 years.
Company leaders say they hope to launch the first wave of approximately 10 area locations within the next three years, signaling a renewed push into communities with strong retail traffic and established commercial corridors, factors that make Willow Grove an attractive target.
Firehouse Subs is known for its hot specialty sandwiches featuring steamed meats and cheeses served on toasted sub rolls. The chain was acquired in 2021 for $1 billion by Restaurant Brands International, whose portfolio also includes Burger King, Popeyes, and Tim Hortons.
The brand previously operated in the Philadelphia market beginning in 2011 but exited in early 2023 during a systemwide transition following the acquisition. Company executives say upgrades to marketing, technology, and franchise support have since strengthened operations and positioned the chain for a more sustainable regional expansion.
Firehouse Subs is now actively seeking franchise partners and is open to a range of restaurant formats, including inline shopping center locations and potential drive-thru sites. New restaurants typically range from 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, a size well suited for established retail destinations like the Willow Grove commercial district.
If plans move forward, the expansion could bring new dining options and local job opportunities to the area while marking the brand’s return to a market it previously served for more than a decade.
