Police recovered a stolen vehicle and suspected narcotics during a traffic stop in the Jenkintown section of Abington Township, according to authorities.
On Feb. 4 at approximately 5:23 p.m., an officer on patrol near Old York Road and Washington Lane observed a gray Acura MDX that was reported as stolen out of Philadelphia in January. Police said the driver was also observed committing a traffic violation by making an improper lane change without using a turn signal.
A traffic stop was conducted at the intersection of Rydal Road and Old York Road, where the driver, identified as Derrick Jones, 62, of Philadelphia, was described as cooperative and immediately showed his hands upon contact with officers.
After Jones was detained and placed in handcuffs, officers reported observing in plain view a clear vial on the driver’s seat containing a substance suspected to be crack cocaine.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a pill bottle. Inside the bottle, police said they found a knotted plastic bag containing 36 plastic flip-top containers. Each container held a white, rock-like substance suspected to be crack cocaine.
According to police, the quantity and packaging of the suspected narcotics are consistent with street-level distribution based on the officer’s training and experience.
Jones is facing a felony charge related to the possession of narcotics.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 4, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Juanita A. Price.
