It has been one year since Abington School District launched its BusPatrol school bus safety program, and officials report that more than 3,800 violations have been recorded during that time.
The BusPatrol initiative uses automated side stop-arm enforcement cameras installed on school buses to capture vehicles that illegally pass when buses are stopped to pick up or drop off students. The program is aimed at promoting safer driving behaviors and increasing awareness about school bus safety throughout the township.
Under Pennsylvania law, passing a stopped school bus equipped with the automated enforcement system results in a $300 citation. The violation does not add points to a driver’s license, but officials emphasize that the fine is intended to deter dangerous behavior and protect children.
Township officials remind motorists that school bus stop-arm laws are in place to safeguard students as they board and exit buses each day. Drivers are required to stop when a bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
With thousands of violations recorded in its first year, township leaders are hopeful that that number will be decreased next year.
Officials are urging residents to remain alert, especially during morning and afternoon school hours, and to always stop for school buses to help keep Abington’s children safe.
