The Reading Symphony Orchestra presents “Valentine’s with Romeo & Juliet” on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Santander Performing Arts Center in Reading. Eric Carle
“Small Living Things: The Magical Art of Eric Carle” opens Saturday at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown. The exhibition highlights the small creatures from Carle’s collection with original artwork from “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and other popular books, as well as larger animals from his “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” collaboration with Bill Martin Jr. There are examples of process art and sketches, poster designs, an early advertisement, and objects representative of Carle’s influence in contemporary culture. Exhibits opening
Two new exhibits are opening at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center in Pennsburg this month.
A commemoration of the country’s 250th anniversary — Who Lived in the Perkiomen Valley in the 1700s? — opens Saturday. At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the opening day, curator Emma Hartman will present stories based on her research about the region’s population at the time of the American Revolution, with an emphasis on African Americans. The art show Hex Signs is open through April 6, featuring works by Berks County hexologist and folk artist Hunter M. Yoder. These traditional Pennsylvania Dutch barn stars incorporate symbols rooted in pre-Christian Germanic traditions.

Ice harvesting
An ice harvesting demonstration is scheduled for Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Historic Dreibelbis Farm near Virginville. The event, presented by the Dreibelbis Farm Historical Society, will include a demonstration of antique ice harvesting tools and (weather permitting) cutting and harvesting ice blocks from the pond. It was rescheduled from last weekend due to frigid weather.
