The search for Cheltenham’s next police chief is moving forward, with township officials preparing to begin interviews within the next month, according to a report.
More than 30 candidates have applied to replace outgoing Chief John Slavin, whose retirement this summer prompted a nationwide search. Officials say the hiring process will include multiple rounds of interviews, with a final selection expected by the Board of Commissioners sometime in July.
During a recent public meeting, commissioners emphasized the importance of finding a candidate who will continue the department’s focus on community engagement and inclusive policing. Residents also voiced support for a leader who reflects Cheltenham’s values as a diverse and welcoming community.
Township leaders say while there is urgency to fill the role, they are focused on a thorough process to ensure the right fit for the community.
