A routine traffic stop in the Jenkintown section of Abington Township on March 24 resulted in the arrest of a convicted felon for illegal possession of a firearm, according to police.
Tyree Gregorio, 34, of Philadelphia, is facing multiple felony charges stemming from the incident.
Officers from the Abington Police Department observed a black BMW SUV with an inoperative driver-side taillight and a suspended registration traveling north on Old York Road near Washington Lane. Gregorio, the driver, was the sole occupant.
During the stop, police detected the odor of marijuana and found a small amount in Gregorio’s possession. He consented to a search of the vehicle, which revealed a black and silver semi-automatic Bryco .38 handgun in a bag in the backseat. Authorities noted that Gregorio, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms and did not have a concealed carry permit.
Gregorio’s criminal history includes prior convictions for burglary, manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance by an unregistered person. He admitted to purchasing the firearm via Facebook Marketplace for $100 and confirmed he did not legally acquire it.
Gregorio was taken into custody and faces multiple charges related to illegal firearm possession and controlled substances. Police say the case is now proceeding through the local court system.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 8 at 10:15 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Juanita A. Price.
Bail was set at $10,000.
