A suspected shoplifter caused chaos at Willow Grove Park Mall on Saturday when he bolted from Macy’s and led Abington police on two separate foot chases, authorities said, according to a report.
Store employees told police the man was seen stuffing merchandise into a red bag before walking out without paying. When officers approached, he allegedly dropped the bag and took off, sprinting past shoppers on the first floor and up an escalator before being intercepted.
Police said the suspect resisted arrest, injuring an officer’s knee, and managed to break free once again. He fled the mall and crossed Easton Road before officers finally caught up to him in a backyard nearby.
The bag he abandoned contained 28 stolen items valued at nearly $1,900, which were later returned to Macy’s, according to police.
Authorities identified the suspect as Nelson Bermejo Fumero. Police also noted that he claimed to be from outside the United States.
Officers expressed frustration after Judge Hakim Jones released Fumero on a signature bond, allowing him to walk free without posting bail.
