The Abington Township Shade Tree Commission is encouraging residents to help grow the township’s tree canopy by giving away 300 free native trees.
The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 2595 Rubicam Avenue in Willow Grove.
Each household will be able to receive up to two trees, available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The program is designed to promote environmental stewardship, improve neighborhood aesthetics, and provide long-lasting benefits to the community.
A variety of species will be offered, giving residents the chance to choose a tree that best fits their yard and landscaping needs. The selection includes: Silver Maple, Sugarberry, Yellowwood, Black Tupelo, White Oak, Canadian Serviceberry, Cherokee Brave Dogwood, and Prairiefire Crabapple. Each of these native trees is well-suited to the local climate and plays an important role in supporting pollinators, birds, and other wildlife.
"Abington’s private residences grow 78% of our tree canopy, and every year we lose more of that canopy as homeowners cut down trees," Abington Township wrote. "Decades of research shows that losing trees negatively impacts our community in a variety of ways ranging from lower property values to increased flooding to the loss of wildlife that rely on those trees."
In addition to the environmental benefits, township officials note that trees can also increase property values, provide natural shade to reduce energy costs, and offer seasonal beauty throughout the year.
How to Get Involved
Residents can reserve trees online ahead of time to guarantee availability. Volunteers are also needed to assist with distributing the trees, helping residents load them into vehicles, and sharing planting tips.
