An excavator reported stolen in Upper Moreland Township has been successfully recovered, thanks to the quick action and assistance of community members.

According to the Upper Moreland Police Department (UMPD), officers received a theft report on Friday, Aug. 22, involving a Komatsu excavator. Investigators quickly determined that the heavy equipment had been taken under suspicious circumstances and began piecing together leads.

The case gained momentum when police released an image of a white Ford L-series truck pulling a yellow trailer, which was believed to be connected to the theft. Authorities shared the photograph with the public and asked residents to help identify the truck or anyone who might be associated with it.

By Monday, Sept. 1, the appeal had spread widely across the community, both through the department’s official CrimeWatch page and through word of mouth. Residents took notice, and tips began to flow in. By 5 p.m. that day, UMPD confirmed that the excavator had been recovered, marking a swift and positive resolution to the case.

“Thanks to the help of members of the community, the stolen excavator has been recovered,” the department announced in an update.

While the equipment has been returned, the investigation remains ongoing. Detectives are still working to determine who was responsible for the theft and whether the truck spotted with the yellow trailer is directly tied to the case. Police continue to ask anyone with information about the vehicle, or the individuals who may operate it, to come forward.
