An investigation is underway following an incident in Cheltenham Township in which a police officer shot an aggressive dog that reportedly attacked residents and pets in the Wyncote neighborhood.

On Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, around 6:20 p.m., Cheltenham Police were called to the Wyngate Community in the Wyncote section of Cheltenham Township after receiving multiple 9-1-1 reports of "a vicious pit bull chasing and attacking people and other dogs."

When officers arrived, they quickly located the dog. According to police, the animal charged at one of the responding officers, who fired a single shot in self-defense, striking the dog. The dog then fled the area.

A short time later, the dog’s owner contacted 9-1-1 to report that their pet was injured. Officers confirmed it was the same animal involved in the earlier attacks and transported it to a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital for treatment.

The incident remains under investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the event or was attacked by the dog is asked to contact the Cheltenham Police Department at 215-885-1600.
