Drivers in Cheltenham Township and the surrounding areas should prepare for detours starting Wednesday, Oct. 15, as parts of Route 73 (Church Road) and Greenwood Avenue close for an eight-month PennDOT construction project.
The $10.8 million project aims to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersections of Church Road, Greenwood Avenue, and Rices Mill Road.
Beginning Oct. 15, westbound Church Road will be closed 24/7 between Rices Mill Road and the Curtis Arboretum entrance. Traffic will be detoured via Washington Lane, Route 309 (Cheltenham Avenue), Ogontz Avenue, and Easton Road.
At the same time, southbound Greenwood Avenue will be closed 24/7 between Spruce Lane and Barker Road, with detours directing drivers along Township Line Road, Washington Lane, Route 309 (Cheltenham Avenue), and Ogontz Avenue.
PennDOT expects the closures to last through July 2026, as crews reconfigure intersections, upgrade signals, and improve pedestrian safety.
Motorists should plan for delays and congestion, especially during peak travel times, and allow for extra travel time. All work is weather dependent.
