The Montgomery County Board of Elections convened to certify the results of the 2025 general election Monday afternoon when they learned one race was being challenged.
A recount petition for the Lower Moreland Township Board of Commissioners Ward 2 race is expected, according to John Marlatt, chief of elections and transactional practice unit with the Montgomery County Solicitor’s Office.
The board took a brief recess as Marlatt confirmed the development with the Montgomery County Prothonotary’s Office. Figures from the Ward 2 contest revealed Democrat Chuck McDade received 408 votes and Republican Joseph Pace had 406 votes.
Marlatt told election board members and county officials he expected to receive a hearing date sometime in the next few days and will “work with the court to conduct a recount.”
The Lower Moreland Township race was the sole recount petition filed in the off-year election featuring judgeships, along with municipal and school board candidates. There were 1,200 registered candidates and 400 positions elected, according to Director of Elections Frank Dean.
There were 310,164 ballots cast, according to Dean, who said the 2025 general election netted a 50.16 percent voter turnout rate, which Montgomery County Election Board Chairman Neil Makhija deemed a “historic” feat for an off-year election.
The 2025 election results were certified in a 2-0 vote with Makhija and Montgomery County Election Board Vice Chairwoman Jamila Winder in favor. Montgomery County Commissioner Tom DiBello was absent from Monday’s meeting.
