Two local police officers were injured Thursday morning after crashing their motorcycles on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia while participating in the annual Camp Out for Hunger motorcade, according to a report.
Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that the two injured officers were from Abington Township Police Department and Upper Dublin Township Police Department. Emergency crews responded quickly, and both officers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. on I-95 southbound between Washington Avenue and Christian Street, near Penn’s Landing, as a large procession of law enforcement officers made their way to the WMMR Preston & Steve Camp Out for Hunger event at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
Aerial footage from the scene showed one motorcycle officer swerving to avoid a disabled white Ford Transit van stopped on the left shoulder. As the van’s door reportedly opened into the lane, one officer attempted to avoid it and collided with another rider in the procession. Both officers were thrown from their motorcycles.
All southbound lanes of I-95 were temporarily blocked while first responders treated the officers and cleared the scene.
