PECO has begun a project to upgrade and modernize natural gas infrastructure in Upper Moreland Township, part of the utility’s ongoing commitment to provide safe and reliable energy service for local customers.

The work, which begins today, will take place along Mason Mill Road between Byberry Road and Pennypack Creek. Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the project is expected to be completed by December 2025.

According to PECO, the project will involve replacing existing natural gas equipment and installing new underground pipe designed to improve safety, durability, and long-term service reliability. The work will be carried out by Utility Line Services, a qualified PECO contractor.

Most of the construction will take place outdoors, but some work will require PECO or contractor personnel to enter properties to complete safe reconnections to the new natural gas main. During this process, natural gas service will be temporarily shut off to individual properties while connections are made, and technicians will return later the same day to relight appliances and restore service.

In addition, as part of compliance with Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) regulations, PECO will relocate any remaining indoor natural gas meters to outdoor locations. The new meters will be placed above ground and as close as possible to the current indoor position. The company says this relocation improves safety for customers, employees, and emergency responders by ensuring easier and faster access in case of an emergency.

Residents with questions or concerns about the project, or those needing to schedule an appointment for meter access, can contact Rich Brunner of Utility Line Services at 215-430-1503. PECO asks that tenants forward this information to property owners if applicable.

PECO representatives said they appreciate the community’s patience during the construction period, noting that the project is part of a broader effort to strengthen and modernize the region’s natural gas system. “These upgrades are essential to improving safety, reliability, and service for our customers today and into the future,” the company said in a statement.
