Danyelle Smith, 48, of Philadelphia, is facing a felony charge stemming from a shoplifting incident in Abington Township, according to police.

The Abington Police Department was dispatched to TJ Maxx, located at 1495 Old York Road in Abington for a report of retail theft.

When a police officer arrived at the scene, a security guard told him that Smtih was in the rear of the store, placing items in tin foil and into a bag, according to police.

Officers approached Smith inside the store and found tin foil on items marked for sale inside of a bag of the shopping cart she was pushing. She told the officer that her name was Janet, but a records check showed no record of that name. She then told officers that her name was Janey Jenkins, but was unable to provide her social security number.

The responding officer and two other police officers attempted to place Smith under arrest, but she pushed away from officers as they attempted to place her in handcuffs, according to police.

Officers were able to detain Smith a short time later, and a backpack was recovered that contained an additional role of tin foil, prewrapped sheets of tin foil, and a pair of scissors.

According to police, Smith has three prior retail theft convictions, elevating this charge to a felony.

The total value of items taken was $363.79.

A formal arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2025.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
