Cheltenham School District Superintendent Dr. Brian W. Scriven issued an update on the ongoing investigation that led to the cancellation of Cheltenham High School’s football season.
The district first announced the decision on Oct. 20, after receiving a report in late September that a student had been assaulted in the team’s locker room. The initial allegation prompted both an internal review and an independent investigation, as well as a separate probe by the Cheltenham Township Police Department.
In his latest statement, Dr. Scriven said the district’s internal investigation is “nearing completion” and that officials are “awaiting the formal findings and recommendations from the independent investigators who have been assisting us throughout this process.”
“Since that time, the district has been working diligently and carefully to ensure these matters are addressed with the seriousness, fairness, and thoroughness they deserve,” he wrote.
Dr. Scriven acknowledged the toll the situation has taken across the school community. “We recognize the impact this situation has had on our students, families, staff, and the broader community. Please know that our foremost priority remains the safety, well-being, and dignity of every student in the Cheltenham School District,” he said.
The superintendent added that decisions about the football program’s future “are currently under advisement” and will depend on the outcomes of the ongoing investigations.
Those next steps, he said, will be guided by the district’s “commitment to accountability, restorative practices, and the values of respect and integrity that define our district.”
Further updates are expected once the investigations conclude.
