Watch out, because there’s a new chief of police in town.
After leading the Abington Police Department for 18 years, Chief Patrick Molloy officially handed over the reins to a new leader on Tuesday, and it went to someone who is especially deserving.
Eight-year-old William Weir, a third grader from Abington who is battling retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer, was sworn in as Police Chief for a Day during a heartfelt ceremony that brought the community together in support and celebration.

“I have a real gold badge, one of my old badges that I’m going to present to him,” Chief Molloy told the crowd as the ceremony began.
Police officers, K-9s, firefighters, medics, and even game wardens lined up outside the station to greet the new chief, who had a well-deserved day off from school to take on his big new role.

William arrived with his mom, dad, and brother Luke to inspect the force before changing into his custom-made police uniform for the official swearing-in. His dad, a firefighter, and his mom, a nurse, said they weren’t surprised that William took to the badge so naturally as helping others runs in the family.
“William is the kindest kid," his mom said. "He’s very big into police, fire, EMS, military. He’s just a tough kid and continuing his fight."
Chief Weir didn’t waste a moment getting to work. He inspected the police fleet, checked in with the K-9 unit, and made sure the department was in top shape.

For the Weir family, the day meant far more than just photo opportunities. It was a reminder that even in the toughest times, a welcoming community can make all the difference.
“It’s overwhelming that the community just continues to keep thinking about William through all that he is going through, and he’s just never left behind, despite what he’s going through,” his mom said.
Friends, neighbors, and local first responders have been rallying behind William since his diagnosis, often calling him an inspiration for his courage and positivity.
