Man pulled over in Abington with semi-automatic Glock, hollow point bullets, weed, pills during traffic stop, police say

Dwayne-Ato Karanja Melton, 29, of Philadelphia, faces multiple felony charges stemming from a traffic stop in Abington Township, according to police. 

A police officer from Abington Police Department observed a white Dodge Charger traveling east on Moreland Road in the area of Fleming Avenue on May 24 at 10:37 p.m.

According to police, the vehicle’s registration was suspended for insurance cancellation, and the vehicle’s tint was so dark on all side and rear windows that it prohibited the officer from being able to see into the vehicle.

The officer conducted a traffic stop at 2500 Moreland Road and made contact with the operator, later identified as Melton. The officer immediately detected the odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the car, according to police. 

The vehicle was seized, towed and secured in a police evidence garage. A search warranted was obtained a day later, which revealed the following items:

  • One black semi-automatic .40 Glock 27 with extended 22 round capacity magazine containing 20 .40 cal hollow point bullets and 1 .40 cal bullet in the chamber. A “switch” or auto sear was located on the gun
  • One mylar bag “50 dollar bill” label containing marijuana
  • One MOODZ brand THC vape
  • 1 back of banana Backwoods
  • One black backpack containing the following: 
  • Three one-ounce mylar bags containing marijaua
  • Two mylar bags “50 dollar bill” label containing marijuana
  • Four mylar bags containing 1000mg THC edibles
  • Four boxes of MOODZ brand 2-gram TCH vapes
  • One orange pill bottle containing nine blue diamond pills with “S” Superman Logo – believed to be ecstasy
  • One orange pill bottle containing 82.5 pills of Acetaminophen and Oxycodone.

Melton is charged with Firearms Not to Be Carried without a License, and Manufacture, Deliver, Possess With Intent to Deliver.
