The Abington School District community is mourning the loss of LaVonda C. Daniels, 45, a devoted educator who served students, families, and staff for over 15 years.
Daniels passed away on April 27. Her cause of death was not disclosed.
Daniels joined Abington in 2006 and held many roles, including classroom teacher, mentor, curriculum specialist, and assistant principal. At Highland Elementary School, where she taught grades two through six, she launched the beloved Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Day of Service — mobilizing students, staff, and families to give back to the community. In 2017, she became elementary curriculum specialist at Overlook Elementary and later assistant principal at both Abington Junior and Senior High Schools.
Her leadership was always student-centered
“We were very fortunate in the Abington School District to have had LaVonda Daniels as part of our district family for so long," Abington Superintendent Jeff Fecher said in a statement. "Her student-centered approach to educating, coupled with her heart and warm personality, made her an exceptional classroom teacher and an even better leader when she advanced to become an Elementary Curriculum Specialist and later an Assistant Principal at Abington Senior High School.
“LaVonda touched the lives of many in our school community over the years, both students and staff," he added. "She has been, and will continue to be, missed greatly.”
Daniels held degrees from Howard University, Temple, Cabrini, and Gwynedd Mercy Universities, and was pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership. Though she left Abington in 2021 to become principal in the Centennial and later Cherry Hill school districts, her roots here ran deep.
Beyond education, she was the wife to Darius Daniels, and mother to twin sons, Justin and Jordan. She loved Broadway shows, painting, and time at the beach, but her greatest joy was her family, according to the article.
A visitation will be held on May 12, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Victory in Christ Christian Center in Westville, NJ. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with a private final disposition.
