The Abington Police Department is honoring two of its members for helping get a "ghost" gun off the streets and apprehending a suspect who was charged with narcotics and weapon offenses.
According to police, on July 12, 2024, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Officer Hasara and Officer Hunt conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for multiple equipment violations, including heavily tinted windows. While speaking with the driver, the officers detected the odor of marijuana and observed drug paraphernalia in plain view. When informed of these observations, the driver became increasingly "nervous and argumentative," according to police.
Based on their observations, the officers seized the vehicle and applied for a search warrant. Upon receiving approval, the officers conducted a thorough search of the vehicle, which resulted in the discovery of marijuana, marijuana packaging materials, a “ghost” handgun, and a magazine containing 15 rounds of ammunition. The handgun was found to have an illegal switch that converted it to fully automatic mode.
"This case highlights the importance of proactive policing and thorough investigative procedures in identifying and removing illegal firearms and drugs from the community, ultimately enhancing public safety," Abington Police Department wrote.
Their efforts earned them an officer commendation.
