A Cheltenham man admitted to stabbing his adult son in the back, lacerating his kidney, during a domestic-related incident at his residence, according The Mercury.

William M. Broadnax, 84, of the 7700 block of Lucretia Mott Way, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Court  to a felony charge of aggravated assault causing bodily injury and now faces several years of court supervision.

The incident occurred on Oct. 1, 2023.

Broadnax will serve five years of probation. He will be prohibited from having offensive contact with his son and must continue taking his prescribed medications.

According to the article, the judge implied Broadnax may not have been taking his medications at the time of the incident, which may have contributed to his behavior. The judge warned Broadnax that if he does not take his medication as ordered and prescribed he could be held in violation of his probation and face jail time.

Assistant District Attorney Meghan Carney explained Broadnax’s son, the victim, supported the outcome of the case, given his father’s age, his health and their relationship.

At the time of the incident witnesses told police they observed Broadnax stab his son in the back as the victim was walking away from the front door of the residence after a physical disturbance between the two men.

The victim got in a vehicle operated by his girlfriend, police said. As the woman headed to a hospital, the victim became unconscious and the woman pulled over on Ogontz Avenue in Philadelphia where a Philadelphia police officer was located. That Philadelphia officer put the victim in his police vehicle and transported him to Einstein Hospital, according to court papers.

The victim underwent emergency surgery for a lacerated kidney, which had to be removed, according to the criminal complaint.
