The family of 19-year-old Wyleek Tinsley has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Abington Township and several of its police officers following the fatal shooting that occurred in early March, according to a report by 6ABC.
Tinsley was killed on March 6 when officers responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at the Rosemore Gardens apartment complex, located on the 2300 block of Rosemore Avenue in Glenside. Police say they were called to the scene around 11:15 a.m. after receiving 911 reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they allegedly heard another gunshot and screams from an adult woman inside one of the units. Tinsley was reportedly unarmed at the time he was shot.
The lawsuit claims the family has been kept in the dark about key details of the case, including not receiving the autopsy report or any formal updates from law enforcement or the district attorney’s office. Their attorney has also stated that a civil rights lawsuit will be filed in federal court to compel the release of police body camera footage from the incident.
In mid-April, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele announced that an internal investigation concluded the officers’ use of force was legally justified. The probe included interviews with officers and witnesses, a review of body camera footage, emergency dispatch recordings, and physical evidence from the scene.
The family began publicly pressing for the release of bodycam footage in April, and say they are still seeking transparency and accountability regarding Tinsley’s death.
