Out with the old, in with the new.

Montgomery County is moving forward with a construction project to replace Bridge #38, located on W. Moreland Avenue, between Flamingo Road (Upper Moreland) and Broad Street (Hatboro), adjacent to the Hatboro Memorial Swimming Pool.

Haines and Kibblehouse (H&K), based out of Chalfont, is the general contractor performing the work. Officials announced that construction started on July 9. The project was awarded to the company at a cost of $2,201,833.00, according to documents.

W. Moreland Avenue will remain open through the initial phase of the project, which consists of site clearing and utility relocations.

The replacement effort is anticipated to take approximately 11 months to complete and is primarily funded through Montgomery County’s Capital Improvement Program and its Motor Vehicle Registration Fee.

The scope of the project includes full removal of the existing aging bridge, construction of a modern replacement, and associated roadwork and utility relocation. The county has also contracted for full-time on-site inspection throughout the construction process.

The need for this project stems from the structural aging of Bridge #38 and its location in a heavily trafficked corridor. Replacing it will ensure safer, more reliable infrastructure and aligns with the county’s broader goal to eliminate structurally deficient bridges by 2026.

Residents can expect road closures or detours in the area near W. Moreland Avenue and Pennypack Creek. This replacement is part of a broader effort in the region, with similar bridge projects such as the recently completed Warminster Road Bridge and the upcoming Moredon Road Bridge replacement also underway.

While the short-term impact may include traffic disruptions, the long-term result will be a significantly improved and safer bridge serving the community for decades.

The project was officially advertised in November 2024, and the county issued a construction bid invitation in January 2025. Final bids were submitted by December 12, 2024.
