A violent incident in Cheltenham Township has led to a state prison sentence for a Philadelphia man who assaulted a township police officer during a confrontation last year, according to a report.
Calvin Yim, 30, of South 6th Street of Philadelphia, was sentenced to 2 to 15 years in state prison after pleading no contest but mentally ill to a felony charge of aggravated assault related to the April 22, 2023, incident on Bridle Road.
Cheltenham police had responded to a call about a suspicious person near Twickenham Road and Willow Grove Avenue. When an officer approached Yim on Bridle Road and attempted to engage him in conversation, Yim refused, then suddenly punched the officer in the face and head. The violent struggle lasted over a minute, during which Yim attempted to take the officer’s gun. During the struggle, the weapon discharged, and Yim was struck in the shoulder.
Yim fled into nearby woods but was quickly apprehended. He was treated at Abington Memorial Hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The officer also required medical attention for injuries to his head and face.
Judge William R. Carpenter, who imposed the sentence, ordered Yim to continue mental health treatment and medication. More serious charges, including attempted homicide and disarming a law enforcement officer, were dismissed at sentencing. The case was prosecuted by Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney William Harry Highland III, with defense attorney A. Charles Peruto Jr. representing Yim.
