Abington Township Police Department discovered a driver who’d originally rented a vehicle in Philadelphia but failed to return it for over five months.
On Dec. 20 around 6:09 p.m., a black Hyundai Tucson driving north on Old York Road near Woodland Road, said a police criminal complaint. After checking its registration, police were notified that the vehicle was reported as stolen by Avis Rental as of Nov. 19, 2024, out of Philadelphia.
Police said they initiated a traffic stop at the Lukoil parking lot at Old Yor Road at Rockwell Road to make contact with the car’s sole occupant, its driver.
David Zebulon Moore, 34, of the 8200 Cheltenham Avenue in Glenside, was identified to be the driver. He told police that he’d rented the vehicle but could not produce any documentation proving this to be true, police said.
Upon investigating the matter, police found that AVIS had filed a complaint with the Philadelphia Detectives unit, stating they had been seeking the vehicle and attempting to reach Moore since July 19, 2024. AVIS staff confirmed to police that Moore did not have authorization to drive the vehicle anymore and confirmed that they’d like to prosecute, police said.
Additionally, police noted, Moore was driving with a suspended license. Moore told police he was “on a payment plan for” his suspension, said the complaint.
Moore is charged with one felony count of receiving stolen property, one misdemeanor count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and a summary offense of driving while operating privileges are suspended or revoked.
He was released on his own recognizance. He is due for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. before Magisterial District Judge John D. Kessler.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
