Those living in Jenkintown with their own electric vehicles (EV), or even residents with short-term guests with EVs, can continue to benefit from charging stations provided to the community thanks to a few important partnerships.
As 2024 came to its close, the Jenkintown Borough had just completed its fourth year of operation of the EV charging stations for area residents. The 2025 annual license with Amp-Up for continued operation of the Borough's two, EV - Level 2 charging stations has been secured for a new year. The EV charging stations are located in the Leedom Street public parking lot and are available for public use at any time.
According to the borough, the fee schedule to charge an EV is set at $2.35 per hour (with a four consecutive hour maximum use time). This fee to charge has the parking fee built into the fee structure so that is the complete fee total for charging an EV vehicle at the Borough stations. There is a $0.10 per minute “idle fee” for parking that would be accessed should the vehicle be left at the EV charger after the charging session expires.
The chargers were installed as a Public Works project in conjunction with the Jenkintown Environmental Advisory Committee and the Borough Fire Marshal.
“A large portion of the EV charger acquisition and installation costs were covered by grants the Borough was awarded by both state and private grant authorities,” said a release from the Borough. “The Borough received the PA DEP - Level 2 EV Charging Grant for $9,000 as well as the PECO – Commercial level 2 EV Charger rebate of $500. The $9,500 that was awarded offset the total project cost of $12,314 by 77%.”
Borough officials said that the chargers could not continue without these important partnerships.
“This project collaboration by the Borough EAC, Public Works, Fire Marshal, Parking Enforcement, PECO, PA DEP, and EVSE LLC (manufacturer of the charging stations) made this worthy project a success and those efforts cannot be overstated,” said a release from the borough. “The long-lasting benefits of this team effort are still being realized as we enter our fifth year of operation.”
