Many residents in Abington and surrounding townships are reporting the smell of gas outside.
According to Montgomery County dispatch, multiple calls from Abington, Cheltenham, and Springfield have indicated a strong smell of natural gas in the area.
The Abington Police Department said that the smell is coming from a gas line break in Philadelphia this morning and the winds are carrying the gas over our area, which is leaving behind the smell of natural gas.
The Abington Police Department confirmed that there is no immediate danger to residents in the area. The smell should dissipate relatively soon and there are no immediate concerns, according to police.
Reports indicate a gas line ruptured near the intersection of 18th Street and West Olney Avenue at about 8:35 a.m. on Thursday. Construction workers who were working along the 1700 block of W. Olney Avenue struck a gas line.
"The Fire Dept has placed the ruptured gas line incident at 18th St and Olney Ave under control," The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management wrote at 10:51 a.m. "PFD remains on scene checking gas level readings.
