Jenkintown Borough officials are providing an important update to residents regarding the ongoing debris management and mitigation efforts following the fire at SPS Technologies, which began on Feb. 17, 2025.
The fire has raised some concerns about debris in the surrounding areas, and local officials are working to ensure that the safety and well-being of the community.
All residents of Jenkintown Borough who come across debris from the fire are strongly encouraged to immediately call 911. The Jenkintown Police Department is tracking all debris-related calls, ensuring that each location will be addressed. Inspections of these locations will begin soon and will take place during regular business hours over the next several days. The process is designed to ensure that all debris is properly assessed and managed to avoid any health or safety risks to the community.
Jenkintown Police Chief Tom Scott emphasized the importance of cooperation during this time.
“We understand that this situation brings uncertainty and concerns to our community," Scott said. "Please know that we are fully committed to addressing every question and ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents. We appreciate your patience as we work through this incident and move forward with recovery efforts.” His statement underscores the department's commitment to the safety of residents and the resolution of the situation in a timely manner."
A specialized team, consisting of the Borough Fire Marshal and an environmental contractor hired by SPS Technologies, will conduct the inspections. This team will check for debris in both public and private areas, with a focus on determining any potential hazards or risks. If residents are concerned about the air quality inside their homes, they may request an air quality test during the inspection. Residents are advised to take photos of any debris they find and, if there is any property damage, to contact their homeowners insurance for further assistance. It is critical that residents do not touch or attempt to remove any debris themselves to avoid exposure to potential hazards.
Priority for inspections will be given first to the Jenkintown School District property, followed by residences located within the evacuation zone that was initially set up after the fire.

As of now, there are no confirmed risks to drinking water or air quality in the area. However, residents are strongly advised to avoid the area surrounding SPS Technologies due to ongoing safety concerns related to the damage caused by the fire.
