Abington, Cheltenham, and Jenkintown School Districts will remain closed on Wednesday, Feb. 19 due to concerns about air quality in the area after the fire at SPS Technologies.
“We will update you again (Wednesday) once we have more information pertaining to our schools from Abington Township Emergency Management,” said Abington Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jeffrey S. Fecher. “We thank them for their efforts, especially the teams of fire fighters from across our area who were called to the scene to help.”
Jenkintown School District will hold a virtual learning day.
“We understand that many families have been displaced, which may make virtual attendance difficult,” Jenkintown School District wrote in a statement. “Still, we would like to provide the students who can log in the opportunity to meet with teachers, see their classmates, and bring at least a small semblance of normalcy to their day.”
Cheltenham indicated that it anticipates returning to normal operations on Thursday. But residents should check for updates on the situation as they continue to unfold.
“This decision comes based on the recommendation of the county’s emergency operations center," Cheltenham School District wrote. "While we understand that school closures can be disruptive, the safety of our students, staff, and families must always come first.”
Cheltenham High School will be serving as a shelter for those impacted by the evacuation order.
