Woman steals identity, purchases two iPhones under order of man she met on Instagram, police say

Martina Mejia Garcia, of the 600 block of High Street of Perth Amboy, N.J., faces multiple felony counts of identity theft and theft by deception in connection with purchasing two iPhone Max Pro 16’s.

On Feb. 3, the victim met with Lower Moreland Police Department after receiving numerous emails from Verizon indicating that an order for the purchase of two iPhone Max Pro 16’s we’re confirmed and en route to being delivered to the CVS in Huntingdon Valley, 670 Welsh Road.

Since the victim did not previously have an account with Verizon, she suspected it was fraud, according to police. The victim contacted the fraud department at Verizon. An Equifax check of the victim’s identity revealed that three separate inquiries from Verizon were made in her name.

On Feb. 4, police responded to the same CVS where Garcia was attempting to make purchases with a stolen card, according to police. When questioned, Garca provided a photo ID that displayed the original victim’s name. Garcia was placed under arrest, and police secured the package of two iPhones (valued at $979 each). 

Garcia told police that was she instructed by an unknown man on Instagram to use the victim’s card to pick up the package at CVS and would paid for her services, according to police criminal complaint.
