The Abington School District Board of Directors has its newest member.

At its Jan. 28 meeting, the Abington Board of School Directors introduced Selina Wu, a junior at Abington Senior High School, who was recommended by the Abington Senior High School Student School Board Member Committee, and chosen by her peers in a subsequent student body election, to serve as the very first student school board member.

Wu will serve as a non-voting member, but will provide the voice of the students among the other board members on important issues pertaining to the student body. She will hold the position for the duration of the school year.

“Welcome, Selina,” said Yaasiyn Muhammad, Vice President of the board. “Student leadership is vastly important. And student voice is vastly important, so we are so happy to have your voice on this board.”

Other members of the board congratulated and welcome Wu.

“Selina, we are very pleased to see you as a non-voting member of the board,” said School Board President Melissa Mowry. “I feel confident that you’ll represent your fellow students well in our conversations.”

Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Fecher said, “She has consistently exemplified academic excellence, ranking in the 95th percentile of her overall student attendance. She has also met all required service hours and is a valuable member of the Abington Senior High School Asian Student Association. I am proud to have her serve as an outstanding leader and representative of the student body.”

Board member Shameeka Browne added, “Welcome to Ms. Wu. I am so excited that you are here. Thank you so much for your presence.”
