Abington School Board to begin discussions, review of 2026–2027 budget

The Abington School District will begin the process of developing and reviewing its 2026–2027 General Fund budget, a months-long effort that will examine program needs, staffing, and long-term financial planning.

As part of the required budget process, the district will move through three major phases: a Preliminary Budget, a Proposed Final Budget, and a Final General Fund Budget. District administrators and the school board will review several key areas during development, including student enrollment trends, personnel salaries and benefits, student support services, co-curricular opportunities, and central and operational support services.

The district must make its proposed preliminary budget available for public inspection by Jan. 29, 2026, and provide public notice of its intent to adopt the preliminary budget by Feb. 8, 2026. The school board is scheduled to adopt the preliminary budget by Feb. 18, 2026, as part of the timeline mandated under Pennsylvania’s Special Session Act 1 of 2006.

Additional deadlines include publication of any intent to request voter referendum exceptions by Feb. 26, 2026, submission of those requests to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) by March 5, 2026, and a ruling from PDE by March 25, 2026.

The district’s Proposed Final Budget is expected by May 12, 2026, with the final public review period beginning in early June. The board must publish notice of intent to adopt the final budget by June 20, 2026, and is required to adopt the Final 2026–2027 Budget by June 30, 2026. Budget adoption is currently scheduled for June 23, 2026.

Throughout the budget cycle, district administrators will present updates to the school board and the public. Reviews will focus on enrollment forecasts, employee staffing and benefits, facility needs, technology improvements, and other operational priorities. District officials say community transparency and public input will remain central to the process as the budget moves forward.
