Residents of Montgomery County are preparing for one of its coldest days so far this season as an Arctic air mass settles over the region on Friday.
Morning temperatures are expected to start off near 22°F, with conditions remaining below freezing for much of the day.
Forecasters project an afternoon high of only 30 to 31°F, far below the typical mid-40s that the county usually sees in early December. Light flurries are possible late in the morning, and pockets of freezing rain may develop into the evening as temperatures remain in the upper 20s.
The cold spell is part of a broader Arctic push affecting the Mid-Atlantic. Regional meteorologists have noted it as the coldest air mass so far this season, prompting local officials to extend cold-weather alerts through the end of the week.
With temperatures staying below freezing even during daylight hours, residents are urged to use caution on roads and sidewalks, as icy patches may form where moisture is present. Layered clothing and limited outdoor exposure are also recommended due to the sharp drop in wind-chill values.
