On Feb. 13, 2025, a routine traffic stop in Abington Township resulted in both the recovery of a stolen firearm and a life-saving emergency response involving an infant. Officer Michael Sweeney initiated the stop after observing multiple traffic violations. The vehicle was occupied by two adults and two children.
Officer Marquis Ray arrived on the scene to provide assistance. During the stop, Officer Sweeney discovered that the driver was in possession of a stolen firearm, and the individual was promptly detained.
While officers were managing the situation, an adult passenger alerted Officer Ray that her 4-month-old child was choking. Officer Ray immediately turned his attention to the infant, who was unresponsive and showing signs of airway obstruction. Reacting quickly, Officer Ray administered a series of back blows, successfully clearing the obstruction. The child regained consciousness and began crying, indicating that normal breathing had resumed.
The incident underscores the range of challenges officers may face during routine duties and highlights the professionalism and readiness of the Abington Township Police Department. Officer Sweeney’s vigilance led to the recovery of a stolen weapon, while Officer Ray’s rapid and skilled response likely saved the infant’s life. Their coordinated efforts demonstrate a strong commitment to public safety and service under pressure.
The Abington Police Department announced the commendation this week.
