Residents and commuters can expect intermittent closures along Highland Avenue starting this week (Aug. 18), as demolition crews continue work on the former SPS Technologies building site.
The closures will start daily at 7 a.m. and will remain in place until around 5 p.m. each day.
This approach replaces the previously scheduled two-week full road closure, thanks to adjustments by the project team aimed at minimizing disruption for residents who live within close proximity to the site.
The intermittent closures will allow the demolition contractor to safely dismantle structures adjacent to the roadway while maintaining some traffic flow whenever possible. This phase marks a significant step in the long-anticipated transformation of the site, with crews focusing on the safe removal of buildings and related infrastructure that have stood for decades.
Meanwhile, environmental monitoring remains a top priority. Air quality and outfall testing continue around the site to ensure public health is safeguarded during demolition. To date, all monitoring results have remained stable. Importantly, there have been no detections of hazardous chemicals or concerning levels of any monitored substances in the surrounding community. These results offer reassurance that the site work is being carried out with close attention to safety and environmental standards.
