State Rep. Ben Sanchez, D-153rd Dist., announced that Abington Township will receive $650,000 across two grants earmarked for continued recovery efforts from Hurricane Ida in 2021.
The funding will be distributed as follows:
— $300,000 for a stormwater pipe and stormwater inlet structures installation project along the 1400-1700 blocks of Rockwell Road. This should effectively eliminate surface level discharge and limit roadway and pedestrian crossing flooding events.
— $350,000 for owner-occupied home rehabilitation projects in the township whose major systems (roof, foundation, plumbing) were affected by Hurricane Ida and have yet to be repaired.
“These grants represent a significant investment in the well-being of Abington Township residents and will aid in the ongoing recovery efforts from Hurricane Ida. The funding for home rehabilitation will directly improve living conditions, while the stormwater project will enhance our community’s resilience against future weather events,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez worked closely with Abington Township officials to identify these specific needs and secure the grants, a press release stated.

“On behalf of the township and its Board of Commissioners, thank you to Governor Shapiro, State Representative Sanchez, State Representative Guenst, State Senator Haywood, and our partners at DCED for approving the funding for this final step in Hurricane Ida relief,” said Christopher S. Christman, Abington township manager.
“Our township homes, roads, and residents will be safer as a result of the improvements Abington can put in place because of CDBG-DR.” he said.
“Abington Township is extremely thankful to be the recipient of these CDBG-DR funds in order to further recover from Hurricane Ida and mitigate the effects of future large-scale storms. We look forward to helping even more Abington residents remain in their safe and healthy homes and improving parts of our stormwater management system to ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians, and property,” added Kimberly Hamm, Abington Township director of community development.
