Car thefts are on the rise, and area police departments are reminding residents of the steps they can take to lessen their chances of being a victim of these crimes.
As previously reported by Willow Grove Now, police in Upper Dublin warned of the same type of crimes last week. This week, it was Abington Township Police Department that took to social media to update its followers on the same topic.
“Abington police would like to advise the community of increased thefts from vehicles and thefts of motor vehicles occurring during the late-night hours in our community and surrounding communities,” said the department’s post.
Police said that the actors in many cases are also carrying weapons.
“In several of the incidents, the suspects were reported to be armed with a gun,” said the post.
In addition to precautions residents can take to prevent these crimes, the police also wanted to urge car owners not to take matters into their own hands.
“Please do not attempt to confront anyone,” warned the Abington police. “Call 911 immediately if you see or hear anything suspicious.” According to the social media post, the department offered the following recommendations to protect you, and your vehicle, during this risky time.
“We urge everyone to take the following precautions to help prevent becoming a target:
-Always lock your vehicle, even when it’s parked in your driveway or garage.
-Always take your keys or fob with you.
-Never leave wallets, purses, or other valuables in your vehicle.
-Never leave your car running while unattended or unlocked.
-Park your vehicles in well-lit areas whenever possible.
- Consider installing security cameras or using motion-activated lights around your property.
-Consider leaving your exterior lights on throughout the night.
- Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to 911.”
At the end of the day, the department said it wants to be sure all remain vigilant and protected.
“Your safety is our priority,” said the post. “Please help us keep our community safe by staying aware and taking precautions.”
For those that have seen any suspicious activity in and around cars in your neighborhood, the police ask that you immediately call 911.
