It is not too often that you get to make your mark on history. But the residents of Jenkintown are about to have just that opportunity.

The borough of Jenkintown is celebrating its 150th birthday, known as a sesquicentennial, in a unique way. The Jenkintown Community Alliance is inviting all to help “shape the future” by submitting items or ideas to a time capsule.

The capsule, according to a release from the Alliance, will be sealed at a special ceremony in the town’s square on Jenkintown’s official birthday, Dec. 8. A ceremony is planned for Sunday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. The time capsule is slated to be opened at an undetermined date in the future, “giving future generations a glimpse into life in 2024.”

So, what should you bring to contribute? The committee is asking that items be flat, as they hope to include as many contributions as possible. Small objects, no larger than a Rubik’s cube (that’s about 2.25 inches squared), may be accepted.

The Alliance suggests items such as letters, documents, and photographs, so that they can fit plenty into the capsule.  To participate, residents are asked to fill out the form to suggest an item and explain why it represents Jenkintown in 2024.

“Make sure your submission reflects the spirit, people, or community of Jenkintown today,” said the release. The Alliance also asks that each contributor have a connection to Jenkintown, such as living, working, growing up, or frequently visiting the borough.

All submission suggestions must be entered by Nov. 20.

“Let’s leave a meaningful legacy together for future generations,” said the Jenkintown Community Alliance release.
