It was 12 years in the making.

More than a decade ago, the graduating class of 2025 buried a time capsule from when they attended McKinley Elementary School.

It has been a tradition in the school district dating back to 1988. Every 12 years a new capsule is buried, and the previous capsule is dug up and everyone gets to see the “artifacts” that were buried more than a decade prior. The next capsule will be opened in 2036.

“Recently at McKinley Elementary, the latest opening of the school’s time capsule took place, continuing the tradition that started in 1988, with a new capsule being opened every 12 years,” said Allie Artur, communications coordinator at Abington School District. “After a careful selection process, current students selected school photos, class pictures, Phillies bobblehead, QR codes with playlists, future predictions, and a book about Simone Biles.”

The opening of the time capsule coincides with the students who are graduating this year. A new capsule also was buried and will be open in 2036.
